POSTMAN - A LIFELINE FOR US....

Fax, telephone, mobile, STD calls, ISD calls, Courier service, e-mail- these are means of sending messages to our relatives and business associates and even ways by which we can talk to them directly. These are the results of means of communications today. Let us all think of these means of communications as quick, efficient, accurate and with time. But will an invitation to a wedding or a surprise news about someone`s arrival from abroad or a birthday wish through these means have the same effect if it arrived by post? No, is the obvious answer.

A Postman with a surprise parcel as a gift on your doorstep or a wedding invitation card even if sent by post gives a personal and respectable, formal touch to such act.  Even if you are invited to a wedding by mobile phone call or through WhatsApp message it somehow takes the zing away. Seeing and holding the card in hand is a formal invitation. And this card is delivered to us by none other than the postmen who work in the postal services. So in a way they are still needed even in our urban set-up and in the developed IT world that has turned the world to a global village. At the sad times when someone has passed away suddenly a telegram or a letters makes the news to the relevant person in earlier days but now also sometimes this communication still happens. So Postmen are still our lifelines even in the cities. Many students who are studying in Universities, colleges are received their study materials by post while young men and women receive their appointment letters for jobs or interview and calls through post. Thus a postman`s arrivals is still looked out for. Letters regarding approval of loans also arrive through post.

In the rural areas or remote corners of Sri Lanka there are no facilities for fax, telephone, Internet, e-mail or mobile phones. Here is where the value of postman is the highest. In these remote hamlets or villages there are many families whose dear ones are in the far away cities or towns where they work. Letters and money orders from them are eagerly awaited. As most people in the village cannot read or write, there are times when the postman needs to read out or write down their letters. The hard earned money sent to the family members are safely delivered at the right address by the postman and never does he take the path of dishonesty in this matter. In some villages the postman is eagerly awaited and people and children rush to welcome him as he enters the village. Everyone welcomes the village postman as a grand guest. but in cities they are waiting for postman but not much as village peoples. because in cities they have facilities.

As I told before In metropolitan city people are too busy to write letters to their relatives. So the role of the postman has become limited. and city people has many facilities. He is hardly seen or awaited eagerly as before. The impersonal letter boxes at the doorways of houses or flats are where he drops the letters and disappears.

But whatever his role in village or city life he is still there in his brown uniform, walking or cycling with important letters, parcels and money orders. A postman does his duty responsibly. He delivers all letters, etc... even in bad weather -heat, cold or rain nothing can stop him. for a conscientious professional like him we must have utmost respect.

please put a comment my dear ones....

  4. Nice topic. Postman is very important character in sri lanka. But at present , they have to post only bills. Due to busy schedule of people they have no time to write letters and if they want to talk to anyone they use their mobile phones.🥺
